Individual Counseling

Individual Counseling
Life has ups and downs for everyone. At different times, it can swamp us. Choosing to face those ups and downs and learn from them creates more flexibility, growth, and meaning in life. I don't believe in the big fix: the idea that there is something wrong with you and that a magic button will fix it. I do believe that we face challenges in our lives that push us to our limits and offer us opportunities to grow. Counseling is one way to learn from life's challenges, develop more flexibility in life, and live life with more meaning.

My Approach:
The counseling relationship starts with you. My approach is highly individualized, based on what's most important to you and your goals. My approach is eclectic but has a strong base in:
  • Awareness. We think we know what the problem is. But usually what's really bothering us actually lies beneath the surface. It helps to have trusted support to figure out what is really bothering us and why.
  • Acceptance. Building greater acceptance for ourselves and the world around us brings relief, and the ability to see things as they are. We learn to make new and better choices instead of staying stuck in patterns that don't work.
  • Compassion. In our culture we tend to be very hard on ourselves. Without kindness for ourselves, exploring what's hard for us can be brutal. This makes change painful, and sometimes impossible. Developing kindness for ourselves and others is a cornerstone to health and happiness.
  • Positivity. It is important to focus on what is working well in our lives and the strengths that we bring. Solutions and healing are built on our strengths and resilience.
